Next to the Koutoubia Mosque and Jemaa El Fna square, this 19th-century mansion was once the home of Prince Sultan Moulay Ali. Purchased by France, Dar Moulay Ali Maison de France in Marrakech, located in the so-called "Princes' area," became the residence of French army generals during the French protectorate. Since 1958, the residence has housed the French consulate. In March 2007, the French consulate general was moved to Gueliz, and Dar Moulay Ali remained simply the residence of the French consul general.

Closed since March 2007, the former consulate premises, adjacent to the consul's residence, underwent significant restoration work from 2014 to 2017, sponsored by both Moroccan and French patrons. On May 22, 2017, the new Dar Moulay Ali Maison de France space in Marrakech was inaugurated. The former consulate premises, including the former consuls' hall and the former wedding hall, entrusted to the French Institute of Marrakech, are now partially open to the public.

The Maison de la France includes a room dedicated to the memory of the consular residence, an exhibition gallery, a tea lounge, and a travel boutique.

The two authors, Professor Hamid Triki and Mr. Richard Edwards, have also written the book "Dar Moulay Ali, Journey to the Heart of Memory," which recounts the history of this historic residence.
